You’re quick to upgrade! The first time I tried the automatic upgrade was with 2.8.4 but I don’t remember deactivating the plugins. I should remember this on my next upgrade. The most important is to back up the WordPress files and database. It’s good that you figured out your mistake.

WP 2.9 version almost come out ( or already come out I guess) but I still use 2.7 version.. ..usually using automatically upgrade tool no need to deactivate the plugin but I can’t figure out why you faced the problem..anyway it’s good to take the precaution before upgrading..for those who don’t know what kind of file to backup just backup all WP folder..

I am having the same problems – it just freezes after the unpacking the update. Tried the deactivating plug-ins (I too never did this before to update and experienced no problems). It looks like the abstract blog will have to wait till I get an answer. My photorealist painting blog updated no problems – go figure!
