WordPress Upgrading: 2.8.5. version

From WordPress 2.8.4 to WordPress 2.8.5





You may already aware that WordPress 2.8.5 version as newest version already launched. This newest version is hardening release for WordPress 2.8.x series.

The headline changes in this release are:

  • A fix for the Trackback Denial-of-Service attack that is currently being seen.
  • Removal of areas within the code where php code in variables was evaluated.
  • Switched the file upload functionality to be whitelisted for all users including Admins.
  • Retiring of the two importers of Tag data from old plugins.


WordPress Automatic Upgrade Problem

And of course, I rashly try to upgrade mine by click “upgrade automatically” button right after I knows this news. Yes, I upgrade it for security reasons of course. As you may already aware that the first thing in securing WordPress rule is that always upgrade WordPress to latest version available. But – yeah, there is a but – I face a problem with WordPress automatic upgrade. The upgrading process stuck in middle of process after I click “Upgrade Automatically” button.

Firstly, I think that because I used Fantastisco to install this online knowledge blog back then. Yeah, I ever heard that sometime there are bloggers that faced problem with WordPress automatic upgrade if their blog installed by using Fantastisco before. Therefore, I learn in the net about how to upgrade WordPress manually. And after make same research according it, I aware that I must go trough a complicated way if upgrade WordPress manually, and I surely do not have a time for it. So, I try to find why I fail in my first automatic upgrading before instead try manual upgrading.



The Mistake

Thanks God! I found my mistake. It is a silly little mistake indeed. I forgot to deactivate plugin before click “Upgrade Automatically” button. And also, it seems that it is blessing in disguise for the automatic upgrading failure before. Yeah, it is really a blessing because the problem make me aware that I must do some step before I can upgrade my WordPress safely. It is really risky if I just upgrade WordPress without do some preparation first. So, here I share all steps that we must do for safe WordPress upgrading.



Upgrade the WordPress Safely

First step: Backup all WordPress data

  1. Backup wp-config.php
  2. Backup Database
  3. Backup wp-content folder
  4. Backup blogging script
  5. Backup .htaccess

Second Step: Deactivate all plugins

I use bulk action facility for easy deactivation all the plugin in one command.

Third Step: Upgrade Automatically

In dashboard — Go to tools — click upgrade — and then click “upgrade automatically” button

My blog is already upgraded successfully to version 2.8.5.

Fourth Step: reactivate all plugin.

I choose to activate plugin one by one so I can track if there are some problems with plugin. And luckily, I did not found any problem to reactivate all plugin.

Fifth Step: the checking

I Check in my dashboard if my blog already running latest version

I also try to browse my blog and try re-login and it seems all okay so far.



Conclusion

We surely must always upgrade our WordPress so it is running the latest version available for security reason. We can easily upgrade our WordPress to latest version by using automatic upgrading facility. Of course, we must follow the right step to upgrade it safely. And never forget to do checking after upgrading.
