WordPress Automatic Upgrade Problem
And of course, I rashly try to upgrade mine by click “upgrade automatically” button right after I knows this news. Yes, I upgrade it for security reasons of course. As you may already aware that the first thing in securing WordPress rule is that always upgrade WordPress to latest version available. But – yeah, there is a but – I face a problem with WordPress automatic upgrade. The upgrading process stuck in middle of process after I click “Upgrade Automatically” button.
Firstly, I think that because I used Fantastisco to install this online knowledge blog back then. Yeah, I ever heard that sometime there are bloggers that faced problem with WordPress automatic upgrade if their blog installed by using Fantastisco before. Therefore, I learn in the net about how to upgrade WordPress manually. And after make same research according it, I aware that I must go trough a complicated way if upgrade WordPress manually, and I surely do not have a time for it. So, I try to find why I fail in my first automatic upgrading before instead try manual upgrading.
The Mistake
Thanks God! I found my mistake. It is a silly little mistake indeed. I forgot to deactivate plugin before click “Upgrade Automatically” button. And also, it seems that it is blessing in disguise for the automatic upgrading failure before. Yeah, it is really a blessing because the problem make me aware that I must do some step before I can upgrade my WordPress safely. It is really risky if I just upgrade WordPress without do some preparation first. So, here I share all steps that we must do for safe WordPress upgrading.
Upgrade the WordPress Safely
First step: Backup all WordPress data
- Backup wp-config.php
- Backup Database
- Backup wp-content folder
- Backup blogging script
- Backup .htaccess
Second Step: Deactivate all plugins
I use bulk action facility for easy deactivation all the plugin in one command.
Third Step: Upgrade Automatically
In dashboard — Go to tools — click upgrade — and then click “upgrade automatically” button

My blog is already upgraded successfully to version 2.8.5.
Fourth Step: reactivate all plugin.
I choose to activate plugin one by one so I can track if there are some problems with plugin. And luckily, I did not found any problem to reactivate all plugin.
Fifth Step: the checking
I Check in my dashboard if my blog already running latest version
I also try to browse my blog and try re-login and it seems all okay so far.
Conclusion
We surely must always upgrade our WordPress so it is running the latest version available for security reason. We can easily upgrade our WordPress to latest version by using automatic upgrading facility. Of course, we must follow the right step to upgrade it safely. And never forget to do checking after upgrading.

everytime i want to update I just click the auto-update without do anything before that.. it work just fine to me but maybe later I need to make that precaution steps before updating, just to be safe..
Yeah, you better prepare.
Unlike many other tools, WordPress upgrades usually keep most of my plugins in tact. From time to time, I have to wait for a new version of the plugin but almost always, this part has been maintenance free for me!
Hem… i bet you will no face problem from 2.8.4 to 2.8.5 version, because there are no big different between those two.
I am having the same problems – it just freezes after the unpacking the update. Tried the deactivating plug-ins (I too never did this before to update and experienced no problems). It looks like the abstract blog will have to wait till I get an answer. My photorealist painting blog updated no problems – go figure!
do you mean that you are still facing the freeze problem even you already deactivate all plugin?
Upgraded to it already, but didn’t done this things, I think you are right this steps are necessary for our safety.
Yeah, i suggest you do backup step before upgrading.
It’s a nice sharing experience Dana. Btw, already upgrade mine without any problems
You are lucky friend.
WP 2.9 version almost come out ( or already come out I guess) but I still use 2.7 version..
..usually using automatically upgrade tool no need to deactivate the plugin but I can’t figure out why you faced the problem..anyway it’s good to take the precaution before upgrading..for those who don’t know what kind of file to backup just backup all WP folder..
And do you not found any security problem for it?
You’re quick to upgrade! The first time I tried the automatic upgrade was with 2.8.4 but I don’t remember deactivating the plugins. I should remember this on my next upgrade. The most important is to back up the Wordpress files and database. It’s good that you figured out your mistake.
Yeah, Backup is important in case we face data lost because of upgrading.
How about people only post their problems along this thread or even better – HELP or SOLUTIONS!!! I hate that the four responses offer nothing that could assist me.
Easy friend.
Yes I’ve tried everything I can think of and it is absolutely refusing to update. And yes I did say just this in the first post Ii made…@dana
What I waste of time… you obviously don’t have a solution….
Sorry for that, yeah, i do not have any other solution if deactivate plugin did not work.
