The Seven Sins of Blogging

For the most part it doesn’t take free psychic readings to figure out why a blog has failed or is failing, but some bloggers don’t always have an eye for determining why their blog isn’t doing so well. If you find that your readership is falling, see if your blog hasn’t become victim to one of these seven deadly blogging sins:

Gluttony

Don’t let all the attention or comments you receive from your blog go to your head – in other words, don’t feed yourself on the words of others. By becoming overindulgent, you can quickly start to skew your perspective to the liking of others, and when you stop being true to yourself

Sloth

If you are not blogging regularly, you can guarantee that you will lose readers and eventually have a failed blog. To keep a readership interested, stick to a regular blogging schedule, and remember that the more often you post, the better.

Envy

If you want to have a successful blog, then you want to remain true to yourself. However, becoming envious of others blogs generally causes writers to mimic those they wish they were more like. As soon as you become like another blog, the less likely you will be to gain readers which is a quick route to failure.

Greed

Trying to become rich and famous through blogging in a short time, you will experience burn out quickly and you will also deter readers. Greed usually causes bloggers to write long and highly informative blog posts, which can be great occasionally, but if done in access can bore readers. Instead, mix up the kinds of posts you put on your blog with some being long and informative and others being short and quick.

Lust

Lust has the same effects on a blogger as envy does. When you start to lust after another bloggers site design or writing style, you can quickly lose your sense of self. Blog readers don’t want to read blog after blog that sounds the same. They want new angles and interesting perspectives.

Pride

While remaining true to yourself is important if you wish to have a great blog, that doesn’t necessarily mean that you should disregard all other viewpoints or comments. Without other perspectives included, your blog is just going to become a one trick pony.

Wrath

When others comment on your blog, they are generally out to participate in a larger community. When negative comments are placed on your blog, don’t allow your anger to get the best of you. The same goes for if you are upset with news or another blog. Allowing your blog to become filled with your own rants isn’t okay, and can quickly deter readers. If something offends you, approach it in an intelligent manner and refute any negative comments.

Creating a successful blog is by no means easy, but falling victim to one of the above seven deadly blogging sins can make your road to success impossible.  Stay true to your blogger-self, but also be sure to remain aware of all that is going on around you.  Doing both will keep your perspective clear while also making sure that you stay appealing to your readership – both with are key pillars in blogging success.
