Blogging Disaster and The Recovery

As we should already aware, disaster come without knowing. We will only can react after disaster happening. There are no ways we can avoid disaster because it is a nature call. Therefore, we only can make some preparation so the harm impact reduces as much as we can, and it will make that we can recovery fast from any kind of disaster. Surely, the disaster will really harm for any people that have no any preparation according it. It will really hard to do disaster recovery if there are no any preparations that have been do. Or, I can say it is impossible to recover if there is no disaster preparation at all. Blogging is surely in that situation too.

Blogging disaster always can happen in our blogging life. Of course, disaster here is in term of blogger which is lost of our blog. Lost of our blog mean that lost of all blog data because of some faulty. The blogging disaster may because web hosting server fault or our own self fault. Blogging disaster will really make a headache if we do not have any preparation for it. All data will be lost and we must start it again from scratch. It will not so much harm if our blog just new one and do not make any big earn yet. But, it is surely a bid deal for blogger that already have an old blog with ton of great content and also big earn. This blogging disaster surely makes a big earn loss and it hard to rebuild the blog if there are no any preparations that do.

Backup WordPress Content Data

Of course, we should already make some preparation to face blogging disaster. I, my self, backup periodically my blog data into my laptop. I backup all data that needs to allow seamless blogging disaster recovery if I face blogging disaster. I do backup for some part of my blog data such as:

Backup wp-config.php

Backup wp-content folder

Backup blogging script

Backup .htaccess

Above for step is for complete preparation of WordPress content data. We can always only use some part of this content data when try to recover our blog but we save all of above four data for caution. We can only use blog theme data and blog plugin data (if it is already enough to recover our blog) which is part of “wp-content folder” in blogging disaster recovery.

Backup WordPress Blog Database

Backup Database is surely the most important thing that we must backup for blogging disaster recovery preparation. If we use WordPress as our blog engine, we can install “WP-DB-Backup” plugin. “WP-DB-Backup” plugin can provide auto backup for our blog in easy way. You can read my article Backup the WordPress Database for detail.

Backup Additional Script

Backup any additional script that already adds to optimize our blog is important. The additional script is such as CSS code. google analytic code, paid review code, google adsense code, and any other code that use in our blog. I my self always backup any code that I apply in my blog. I backup the entire code use notepad and save it in my laptop. This step is already did in first part above — Backup WordPress Content Data — but I write again here because need to have others backup of blogging script in different place (file) so we can manage our blogging script perfectly.

Conclusion

We sometime may face blogging disaster which is lost all our blog data. Therefore, we need some preparation so we can recover fast. The best way for it is backup all important data of our blog such as Blog Database, Plugins, Scripts, and Theme. We can always easily to recover our blog by using Fantastisco WordPress Installation if we have backup of WordPress content data, additional blog script, and blog Database. Yeah, we can easily install new blog with Fantastisco and then export the data that we backup into it, and our blog will recover in no time for sure.

That’s all update this time, wait for next update!

The database backup is one of thing that must be done by blog admin. The database is needed to recover our blog if something bad happen. It is because WordPress database contains every post, every comment and every link that we have on our blog. As WordPress.org user, I use “WP-DB-Backup” plugin to backup this entire Online Knowledge blog database. I use “WP-DB-Backup” plugin because it is really easy to backup WordPress database if compare by using phpmyadmin or MySQL directly.

“WP-DB-Backup” WordPress Plugin Installation

Go to “site admin” page

Click “Plugin” tab

Click “Add New” button

Insert “WP-DB-Backup” in search box

Click “Search Plugins” button

Click “Install” button

Click “Install Now” button

Click “Activate Plugin” button

Ok, the installation already done successfully. Now, I need to do some configuration so it can be used in optimal way.

Configure and Use WP-DB-Backup WordPress Plugin

Still in “site admin” page

Click “Tools” tab

Click “Backup” button

Check “Exclude spam comments”

Go to “Backup Options” part

Check “Download to your computer”

Click “Backup Now!” button

Wait for running progress

The save pop up appear

Save the backup database file to my laptop

Go to “Scheduled Backup” Part

Choose “Once Weekly” as backup schedule

Click “Schedule Backup”

Please note that the “/wp-content/backup-b4283/” file must have 777 as File permission so all the backup step can run normally. We can easy change this file permission by use FTP client manager such as FileZilla. But, if your webhosting use phpsuexec facility in their hosting server, we do not need to change file permission to 777. We can run the backup process normally even without change the “/wp-content/backup-b4283/” file permission. It is more secure like that of course.

Ok, All done! I already use this “WP-DB-Backup” plugin successfully. I already backup this WordPress blog database to my laptop and also already setting backup schedule that will deliver this WordPress database backup each week to my email.

Conclusions

It is quite easy to backup WordPress database by using “WP-DB-Backup” WordPress plugin. We can have scheduled backup for automatic backup. There are some suggestion that we must only do database backup trough “Backup now!” facility instead use “Scheduled Backup” facility. It is for security reason. You can always deactivate this “WP-DB-Backup” plugin directly after use it if only use “Backup Now!” facility, but this “WP-DB-Backup” plugin must remain active all the time if we use “Scheduled Backup” facility.

Yeah, there is always some trade to get on purpose. The blog admin must make choice according this situation. Always choose something base on your needs. I, my self, decide to use “Scheduled Backup” facility this moment for experience sake. I also dare to do this because my web hosting provider use phpsuexec which make I do not need to change backup file to 777 file permission. I may consider to only using manual backup with “Backup Now!” facility in future. Who knows?

That’s all update this time, wait for next update!

I already had access problem to this online knowledge blog. It was not fully down but there were sometimes that this blog could not be accessed. I faced the web hosting problem for almost two weeks. In first time, I thought that it was due to internet connection problem. So, I did ping to letupdate.com in my dos prompt. The ledupdate.com replied the ping perfectly, so It could conclude that there were no internet connection problems. The problem must be in hosting server it self. Therefore, I contacted my webhosting costumer care via yahoo messenger.

Yah, it is an easy way to complaint by use yahoo messenger. I am glad that my webhosting service provides yahoo messenger complain care so i can always complaint to them. The costumer care said to me that there is server maintenance in which my blog is hosted and the problem will solve in 30 minutes. So, I did my routine blogwalking and updated my other blog and came back to check after 30 minutes. And I found that this blog already up at that time. So, I think the problem already solved and back to did my routine things for that day.

But, the access problem still occasionally occur in few days after that day. I already complaint each time the problem occurs and it is always take 30 minutes the problem solves. Yah, the problem always solve but also always occurs. The situation was really bad for this blog. The readers will think that I am not one of serious bloger, and they might leave this blog in deep lonely. Ok, I might be little too much there, but it is true that this blog will suffer some lost if this situation continue. So, I did hard complaint to them, and they finally answered me with the real problem description.

My web hosting service faced the system failure because their UPS failed to did the job when power fail occur. It makes the hosting server down without shutdown and make error on the hosting sever file system. All hosting data is save because it keep in 8 different sever, but it needed time for stability and also web hosting technician still did some maintenance at the broken hosting server. That was why this blog access was not stable for all day of one week. After one week, this blog access already quite stabled but there was another problem I found. I could not install “WP-DB-Backup” plugin in this blog because of the file directory access permission problem.

I could not change the “/wp-content/backup-b4283/” file to mode “777″ which is needed by “WP-DB-Backup”. So, I did my complaint which is already become my routine again. And, I was really thankful for my hosting service technician that gives me some new technology knowledge according this situation. It seems that the problem was not because I could not change the directory to mode “777″. The technician told me that my webhosting service use phpsuexec feature in the host server. This feature make that we can wrote in “755″ directory. We did not need change file directory access to “777″ only for file writing. It makes our site really safe in web security point of view..

So, why did I get the problem to install “WP-DB-Backup” plugin then? It was because legacy of the UPS fail problem before. It maked that all of hosting server file directory become read-only mode. So, there were no ways to do some change in file directory include “/wp-content/backup-b4283/” file directory. Therefore, I must wait this server problem to completely solve for normal hosting activities. I did not consider moving my hosting yet. I still think that my current webhosting service is doing great for affordable price hosting service, even until know. It was my first hosting problem experience anyway, and hopes it will be my the only one.

That’s all update for this time, wait for next update!
