Too Broad Niche Can Kill
I surely made a mistake when launched LetUpdate dot com blog. My mistake was that I decided to use Update the Online Knowledge as title with Internet, Blog, Business, Gadget, IT, and Telecommunication as sub title. You may find that the title (theme/niche) choosing is quite reasonable because the title and sub title have close relationship. Yeah, you should already aware that the entire sub title (Internet, Blog, Business, Gadget, IT, and Telecommunication) is part of the title (Online).
I chose to use entire sub title back then because I was afraid that I might be used up all post idea available if limit the theme in small niche area. I thought that broad niche area will guarantee unlimited post idea source. Yeah – that thought might be right but there are some considerations that I missed to calculate back then. The thing that should include in consideration which become a big issue after this blog run for almost four months. The consideration were:
Confusing The Readers
The readers become unknowing what exactly this blog about because of broad theme in content. It make the readers do not know what exactly they can expect from this blog. There is always content theme changing in each new post. One day the content is about blogging, and next day it is about telecommunication or business. Very confusing, huh?!!
Confusing Me
It is always hard choice for me to decide if one article matches for this blog. It is because natural of broad niche theme which makes there are so many ideas that can create for article but in the end it may not mach with the blog. Yeah – it is always harder to choose from large available choice then from small available choice, isn’t it?
Confusing Google
Even I write Google as subtitle – Exactly, I mean the entire search engine available. Search engine will have difficulty to decide what this blog about because of broad theme in content. As you know, search engine is created to help people find something base on their needs, which is hard to do if blog niche is unclear (too broad). Search engine will more like the blog if can determine what the exactly blog about.
Remove The Confusing Things
Those above three considerations are surely strong enough to make me re-consider about this blog theme. And after do some meditate about this blog theme and sub theme, I choose to reduce the most irrelevance sub theme. I call it as Re-Branding Blog. I re-brand this blog by delete business, gadget and telecommunication from the sub themes and also remove Update the Online Knowledge as theme. I change this blog title become “LetUpdate dot Com” and sub title become “Much Blogging, Little Net and IT”.
This new blog title and sub title mean that blog readers can find many things about blogging, and sometimes also find little about internet (NET) and information technology (IT) in this LetUpdate dot Com blog. I hope the changing will make this blog become more focus and it will remove all confusing things that I already mention before. And if You this blog regular readers, You should already aware about the changing of this blog header image. Yeah – I create a header image to strenghten changing nuance. I hope Readers like this blog new header image (logo?) even-tough it is only a simple image that I create using GIMP.
Conclusion
Choosing Broad blog theme (title) may have benefit which provide wider blog post idea for the content but it has some un-benefit too. Broad blog theme can produce confusing for readers, authors, and also search engine. If possible, It is always good to make the blog more focus so readers, authors, and search engine know what exactly can expect from that blog. For sake of removing all confusing things, I re-brand this blog. I hope re-branding can push this blog to higher level soon.

While I agree to this topic upto an extent but, sometimes a broad niche when chosen appropriately can work out. I am working on this strategy right now with topics of tech, blogging, bikes, videos and examination which definitely seems to be an utter blunder and waste of time.. but, hey, these might keep readers interesting only when you make 3-4 posts everyday on these topics

Broad niche is easy to cover but hard to focus and sometimes readers can not see your branding too. I will re-brand my blog next year. Good luck

Yeah, you’re right. It’s better to plan carefully before setting up the blog and choosing the URL. So we could proceed blogging accordingly to what we had planned after that.

Choosing a single niche and staying on topic is so important for all the reasons you stated. In many cases where the niche is too popular or too broad, sub-niches can corner a market.
For example, rather than having a blog about technology as whole, perhaps diving deeper with a blog about iPhones, SaaS, digital cameras, or CRM would be better.
Yeah, sharpen the niche may help so our blog can stand out from crowd in high competition niche.
