The best learning is to learn from our own mistakes and that’s what I am doing here. As you know, this blogging tips blog‘s domain name is surely a mistake regarding to blogging Search Engine Optimization (SEO) — the basic blogging SEO indeed. LetUpdate as domain name is not related with this blog niche at all. As I already aware, this blog domain name should have blogging word in it since this blog is in blogging niche.
It is needed to be ranked good in search engine – especially in Google search engine which is the biggest search engine for now. Yes, Having a related keyword in domain name of blog is the basic of blogging Search Engine Optimization (SEO) indeed. Related keyword in domain name is a guarantee for better search engine result page (SERP) position.
Therefore, It is needed to choose a domain name which included the targeted keyword in it. And since I already learned from this blog domain name choosing mistake, I chose WorthyCellPhone and TheBroadbandZone as domain name for my other blogs. If you look to the domain name, you should aware that this domain name has targeted keyword on it.
Cell Phone and Broadband Keywords
Yes, It is obvious that I target cell phone and broadband keywords with these two domain names. From these two domain names, I Only already used the WorthyCellPhone domain name for my new blog. And it seems that WorthyCellPhone domain name is working great as The Worthy Cell Phone blog domain name. I say that since Worthy Cell Phone blog is already ranked high for several long tail keyword of cell phone keyword even though the blog is still young (only two months old).
And base on my experience, the hard part to have a domain name with the related keyword in it is how to choose the right keyword – the right keyword that we will use in our blog domain name. Therefore I share the three steps of how I choose the related right keyword through this blog post. I hope it can help this blog readers to start a blog in proper way. For your information, one of the purpose of this blog is to help people with the beginner blogging guidance which how to start a blog is surely included in it.
OK, Let’s to the core of this blog post. Here the 4 steps how I choose the right related keyword domain name for a blog.
Step #1. Target the Popular Keyword Niche
I Use Google Trends to know the trends in the internet. It is useful to decide whether the niche that I intend to choose has the good popularity in the internet. Google Trends is also useful to choose the high popular keyword that I should use in domain name. Beside to know the popularity, Google Trends also help me to know in which country that the keyword is popular. It help to choose the keyword base on the targeted country.
As example I decide to use broadband and cell phone keyword after do my research through Google Trends about telecommunication related niche. I find that Broadband is high traffic keyword with United Kingdom (UK) as targeted country and cell phone is also high traffic keyword with United state (US) as targeted country. In here, for broadband it is already obvious that there are no similar keyword that I can use to target the different country. However for cell phone, I can use mobile phone keyword instead.
So, why do I choose cell phone keyword instead mobile phone keyword?
Yes, it is regarding the targeted country that I already mentioned before. I choose cell phone instead mobile phone keyword because I intend to target US as traffic source.
Step #2. Check The Exactly Traffic Potential
OK, I already chose the popular keywords in targeted country for the intended niche in the first step. Now, I need to find out whether the keywords is really popular. I need to find out how the exact traffic for that chosen keywords. For this need, I use Google AdWords Keyword Tool. I use Google AdWords Keyword Tool to know how many people exactly do search through Google for the chosen keyword.
It is needed to be known as determinant factor for domain name choosing. And again, I use broadband and cell phone keywords as example in here. I find that broadband keyword has 9,140,000 monthly global search and cell phone keyword has 20,400,000 monthly global search. For that much traffic, It is obvious that there is a big potential of success if I can get high rank for this targeted keyword. It is a good potential traffic indeed. Therefore it is worthy to be targeted.
Step #3. Find The Monetizing Potential of The Keyword
As the third step, I check whether the chosen keyword has monetizing potential on it. It is needed because I intend to use the created blog as make money blogging tool. This checking is needed to find whether the chosen keyword can be monetized in future. This step is very important in my opinion. If there is no monetizing potential in the keyword from very beginning, it is surely hard to gain good earning from it in future regardless how hard we try.
For this need, I use Google AdWords Price Estimator. Google AdWords Price Estimator is useful to know the conversion rate of the certain keyword. I find that broadband keyword has $4.06 – $6.10 Estimated Avg. CPC and cell phone keyword has $1.42 – $1.99 Estimated Avg. CPC which is a good conversion rate in my opinion. It mean that broadband and cell phone keyword has good monetizing potential and worthy to choose as targeted keyword.
Step #4. Check The Competition Rank
This is the last step but not least important if compare with other steps. In my opinion, to know the competition rank is a must if we target the success for our blog. Therefore since I target the success, I check how hard the competition is for the chosen keyword. It is needed to find out whether it is possible to outrank the competitor also to find out how hard we must work for it.
I Use Google Search Engine for this need. Google Search Engine able to tell me how hard the competition is. I find that broadband keyword has 63,900,000 search result and cell phone keyword has 74,400,000 search result. It is mean that these both of keywords are the very high competition keywords. It is the keywords that need really hard work to achieve good SERP. So, is it still worthy to try? Let’s find it in conclusions part.
Conclusions
From these four steps of how to choose the right keyword related domain name that I did, I able to profile the broadband and cell phone keyword. Here find the profile:
Broadband Keyword Profiles:
- Targeted country is UK
- Popular Keyword
- High Traffic Potential
- High conversion rate
- Very high competition
Cell Phone Keyword Profiles:
- Targeted country is US
- Popular keyword
- High Traffic Potential
- High conversion rate
- Very high competition
Now, I can decide base on the keyword profiles whether I still want to target the keyword and use it in domain name. It seems that both of the broadband and cell phone keywords are the very high competition keywords which is surely hard to have good SERP. However, there are other points to be considered beside the high competition point. In my opinion, It is still worthy to try outrank the competition for these keywords because of the high traffic and high conversion rate.
I think it is still possible to outrank the competition if I use long tail keyword as the start. Yes, I will target the long tail keyword of broadband and cell phone as first target. There are so many long tail keyword available for these broadband and cell phone keywords that able to optimize for good SERP rank. Also that I still able to optimize the broadband and cell phone keywords and hope can finally outrank the competition in future as long term target.
That’s all update this time, wait for next update!

[...] is quite simple. I created a niche blog that perfect for Google AdSense – started from the right domain name choosing – as well as I did so many Google AdSense testing in that niche blog. With both of the perfect [...]
good to know that I got the best domain name to my blog. I guess most of popular domain(keywords) are registered and used by others.
this is good, thanks!
It is true that most of popular domain (keywords) are registered. However, if creative, we surely still can find a good domain (keywords).
I agree!
I agree to a point, almost all of mine have at least one also. It’s just that people make it seem like the end-all-be-all of domain name purchasing, and it’s far from it.
Oh, I understand now why you disagree. It seems because I sound make domain purchasing as the only solution (or the most important solution) for good SERP but I don’t. There are many hard work to be done if we want really got good position in SERP. Let me clarify that I only try to say that keyword in domain name is one of the many important factor to rank well in SERP.
Dana,
I know that it is not proven as Dennis points out but I do believe that it is important to have at least one keyword in your domoin. I think this helps with SEO and branding as well. Good luck with your other blogs.
Yup Dan, It is always only Google who have the proof. I or we only have the assumption.
OK and what proof do you have that it’s because of the domain name?
Just sayin’.
if it is about Google SERP, I will never have a proof. As usual, I only have an assumption. An assumption base on the search result that appear in it when use certain keyword. Oh, And I forget to mention that if we use “let update” as keyword, letupdate.com get good position in Google SERP even though I never optimize this blog for “Let Update” keyword.
This assumption only can be proof if bloggingtips.com or worthycellphone.com change the domain name (may become dana.com or didi.com) and we see whether they still in number one in Google SERP for “blogging tips” or “worthy cell phone” keyword.
Hey Dana, how are ya! This is my first time here, and I like it so far.
I do have to disagree a bit though with your take on keywording domain names.
Yes, many do feel it helps some with the SERPS, but nothing has really been proven either way. It certainly doesn’t “guarantee” anything ; sorry.
I think there are other factors that should be considered before the keyword aspect…having a domain name that’s short and memorable for instance, with or without the keyword.
I would like to thank you though for introducing me to the pricing tool; like Ileane I had never heard of it before. I don’t currently use adwords, but this will come in very handy when I do.
Mate, of course there are other factor beside the keyword in domain name but believe me the keyword do matters. You can try to search “worthy cell phone” or “blogging tips” in Google, and you will find who in the top.
I am planning to buy some domains and this post was helpful to me to make proper selection. Keep up the good work.
Hope you able to get great domain name.
Dana, there’s a huge amount of info in this post. I have to look at these tools one at a time. Some of them I’m familiar with but this is the first time I saw the AdWords Price Estimator. Thanks for the tip!
Glad to help you and you’re welcome Ileane.
