Have you ever considered having an installation of Wordpress MU though? Supposedly it should also allow you to have multiple blogs (although I haven't tried it yet, as I am still on wordpress.com, and will be until I think I can get enough money to cover my advertising costs).Also, I do agree with your idea of having your new customisation features on a separate blog, but I would rather run it on my own server, than again, it would be somewhat difficult for someone who hasn't ever dealt with web server software before to set up.
