Permalink is abbreviations from permanent link which is a permanent address for web page. In term of Wordpress blog, permalink is URL (Uniform Resource Locator) from each blog post and page. Look at example below for better understanding:
- Letupdate.com >>> web address of this blog
- letupdate.com/domain-purchasing-for-blog/ >>> web address for one of this blog posts
- letupdate.com/about/ >>> web address for about page of this blog
Please you look at the above permalink structure. The permalink structure describes the content of the blog. The readers will aware what about this post just by look on the permalink. This kind of permalink structure is more visible in search engine. It is known as Search Engine Optimizing permalink. This permalink structure is good for web Search Engine Result Page (SERP). It is good if this permalink already have this structure without need to set .i.e. in Wordpress.com or blogspot.com blog.
But, it is really unfortunately that the permalink structure not always as good as Wordpress.com or blogspot.com. In self-hosted blog, we usually need to change our blog permalink setting. This setting needs for better permalink structure like Wordpress.com or Blogspot.com permalink structure. The default permalink post structure for Wordpress self-hosted usually uses some numeric code which is not a good structure for person and also for search engine. Here the example:
Letupdate.com/? p=1 or Letupdate.com/archives/1
You can look that the blog posts permalink do not describe what the post content about. It only consists of meaningless number. It is really bad for blog description, and it is even worse for SERP. Therefore, I instantly change this online knowledge permalink structure.
Wordpress Permalink
Here my way to setting the permalink structure for better description and SERP result of this Wordpress blog:
- Log in to Wordpress admin
- Click “Settings” tab
- Click “Permalinks” button
- Check in “Custom Structure”
- Fill it with /%postname%/
- Click “Save Changes”
The permalink for this Wordpress blog posts/pages already changed. It is using title base permalink structure now. We also can choose another permalink structure settings such as Day and Name, Month and Name, Numeric, or others custom structure. We can choose which posts/pages permalink structure most suitable for our blog. I, my self, think that use posts/pages title permalink structure in this blog already more than enough for better description and SERP result.

Good advice this is a must do if you want google to like you. Not sure why Wordpress defaults to a number but it does so make sure before you get to far along to change this.

Once, I had to change my permalink structure because it was too long and I didn’t know it would give broken links to my posts. But I’m glad I’ve found a plugin that redirects the old permalink to the new one. It’s good you post about this cos this should be done by every new blogger first thing when putting up a blog on Wordpress.

I posted a similar article on permalinks last week. It’s something most new bloggers don’t even think about. Luckily there are tools that help with the clean up so permalinks can be fixed retroactively.
